Welcome to KateHopper.com
I'm a writer, teacher, editor, and mother (and wife and daughter and sister and friend...the list goes on and on). Primarily, I write about motherhood: the dark side, the humorous side, the places where these two intersect. I love finding good writing that combats the myths of motherhood still perpetuated in our society and speaks honestly about what it's really like to be a mother.
I have an MFA in creative writing from the University of Minnesota, where I taught literature and creative writing. I currently teach a variety of nonfiction classes at The Loft Literary Center in Minneapolis, including "Mother Words," a class for women interested in writing about motherhood. I also teach an online version of "Mother Words." Visit my teaching page to learn more about my upcoming classes.
My writing has appeared in Brevity, Literary Mama, mamazine, Minnesota Parent, MotherVerse, Preemie Magazine, nytimes.com, and the Minneapolis StarTribune. I'm currently working on two books: Ready for Air, a memoir about learning to live with uncertainty in the wake of my daughter's premature birth; and Mother Words: A Writing Guide for Mothers.
I've been the recipient of a Fulbright Grant, a Gesell Summer Fellowship at the Anderson Center in Red Wing, Minnesota, a University of Minnesota English Department Outstanding Teacher Award for Graduate Assistants, and a 2008 MN State Arts Board Artist Initiative Grant. I'm co-editor for Literary Reflections at Literary Mama.
