Motherhood & Words

day 6: love and diapers

The Use Your Words blog book tour is stopping at Berit Thorkelson’s wonderful Love and Diapers blog today. I just met Berit a couple of weeks ago at an Another Mother Runner event in St. Paul, but I had heard wonderful things about her from two writer mama friends. And then I mentioned her name to my mom, and my mom said, “I know Berit’s dad, and her grandparents were so good my grandparents.” It turns out that both our families have strong ties to Granite Falls, MN. Who knew. In fact, my mom went to visit Berit’s grandmother in September when she was back in Granite for her reunion. Clearly we are cousins or something.

I love those kinds of connections, and I’m happy to say that I now know Berit, who is a talented and prolific writer and writes Love and Diapers at Parents.com. Thank you, Berit, for your lovely post and for participating in the Use Your Words blog book tour!!

I have been teaching creative writing for almost twenty years. Reading about other women’s lives and experiences has expanded my world. To be able to walk in someone else’s shoes, whether it’s for a moment or an hour or a few days, is an incredible gift, providing me with insight into the human experience. It takes courage to write your truths, especially if it doesn’t seem as though anyone cares, as though anyone is listening. Let me tell you: your stories matter, I’m listening, and I’m here to help you find the heart of those truths, to get them down on the page, to craft them, and to send them out into the world. Together, we will change the world, one story at a time.
