Motherhood & Words

I feel so lucky to be meeting all the wonderful people (and visiting all the wonderful bookstores!) on this tour. Last night I read and discussed Use Your Words at the University of Oregon Duck Store. Thank you so much to Laura White for her hospitality and warmth (and the gift of Melissa Hart’s Gringa, which I’m so looking forward to reading.) And a huge thank you to Debra Gwartney for helping to set up the reading and for being there last night with her wisdom. Debra, it was so lovely to see you again and to meet your dear friend Cheryl.

(If you’re in Minnesota, you’ll have a chance to hear Debra read in October at the 6th annual Motherhood & Words reading. More on that coming up.)

With Debra Gwartney (left) and Laura White.

Today we’ll take the scenic route to Portland and spend the weekend with some dear friends before my reading at Powell’s on the 14th. If you’re in the Portland area, I’d love to see you at Powell’s at Cedar Hills Crossing on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Now I’m off to the hotel swimming pool with the girls, who can’t get enough time in the water.

I have been teaching creative writing for almost twenty years. Reading about other women’s lives and experiences has expanded my world. To be able to walk in someone else’s shoes, whether it’s for a moment or an hour or a few days, is an incredible gift, providing me with insight into the human experience. It takes courage to write your truths, especially if it doesn’t seem as though anyone cares, as though anyone is listening. Let me tell you: your stories matter, I’m listening, and I’m here to help you find the heart of those truths, to get them down on the page, to craft them, and to send them out into the world. Together, we will change the world, one story at a time.

Thank you so much! It’s going really well, though I think we’re all getting a little homesick.

I am so jealous! I’ve tried and tried to write a book…
    Parenting encourages so many stories!

I love that top picture, where your friend is clutching like 5 copies of your book. You are an inspiration, Kate!!
