Motherhood & Words

Thanks for your kind words and your lists last week. I hope you had a lovely long weekend.

D and I spent lots of time playing with the girls and reading in bed as they played. It was heavenly. I read two wonderful books: Toni Morrison’s A Mercy and my friend Alex Lemon’s raw and stunning memoir, Happy. I highly recommend both.

And today my interview with the wonderful Bonnie J. Rough is up at Literary Mama. Check out her memoir, Carrier, if you haven’t already.

Happy reading!

Kate

I have been teaching creative writing for almost twenty years. Reading about other women’s lives and experiences has expanded my world. To be able to walk in someone else’s shoes, whether it’s for a moment or an hour or a few days, is an incredible gift, providing me with insight into the human experience. It takes courage to write your truths, especially if it doesn’t seem as though anyone cares, as though anyone is listening. Let me tell you: your stories matter, I’m listening, and I’m here to help you find the heart of those truths, to get them down on the page, to craft them, and to send them out into the world. Together, we will change the world, one story at a time.

I finished Bonnie's book about a week ago. I think I read it in two days. It's wonderful.

Wonderful interview, Kate! Still haven't read Carrier, but it's still on The List!

Sounds like a wonderful, cozy weekend…somehow I managed to spend most of mine cleaning (with a little playing outside)…and wasn't ready to see Monday morning.

I couldn't put Carrier down–just finished it Saturday night. My husband finally got up sometime around 11 and slept in the other room because I refused to turn the lights out:-)

Kate, I'm so honored by the beautiful profile on Literary Mama! Thank you so much for all you do! (By the way, nothing like finding these great comments about Carrier here on Mother Words! My day has been made!)

    A couple of notes:
One, Morrison is one of my heroes, but I still haven't gotten to A Mercy. I'm a little envious of you for that, but it makes me more determined to pick up the book.

Two, I just realized I may finally cross paths with you. I'll be at AWP in February, and it looks like you'll be presenting on a panel. I'll see if I can track you down at some point; it would be nice to actually say hello in person!

Hey and thanks, as always, for your kind words over at the blog. I've appreciated your encouragement more than you know.
