Motherhood & Words

responses to memoir prompt

Head over to The Red Dress Club today and check out all the wonderful responses to the memoir prompt I provided last week. I’m in heavy-prep mode for the Mother Words Retreat, which starts this Thursday, but I’m going to try to read all of the responses by the end of the week. If you wrote a response to the prompt, don’t forget to link it to The Red Dress Club!

Happy reading!

I have been teaching creative writing for almost twenty years. Reading about other women’s lives and experiences has expanded my world. To be able to walk in someone else’s shoes, whether it’s for a moment or an hour or a few days, is an incredible gift, providing me with insight into the human experience. It takes courage to write your truths, especially if it doesn’t seem as though anyone cares, as though anyone is listening. Let me tell you: your stories matter, I’m listening, and I’m here to help you find the heart of those truths, to get them down on the page, to craft them, and to send them out into the world. Together, we will change the world, one story at a time.

Sorry for putting this here, but I wasn't sure where else to put it. I was just reading your "about me" section and wanted to say that I also experienced a premature birth due to severe preeclampsia. It was actually considered eclampsia since I actually had a seizure at 33 weeks. My son was born by C-section that day, 2 pounds 13 ounces. He was small for his gestational age due to the fact that I also had an undiagnosed bicornuate uterus. Scary stuff. I was only 18 years old. Anyway, my point was actually to say that my little preemie is a 5'7" fifteen-year-old boy who's rocking some Metallica on his guitar in his bedroom as I type this. The fact that either of us are even here excites me every day.
