Motherhood & Words

upcoming online class – and a podcast!

Now that the kids are in school and my schedule has opened up a bit, I’m turning my attention to writing and teaching. Registration is now open for my fall online Motherhood & Words class. Here are the details:

Motherhood & Words Online

Thursday, September 26 – Monday, December 9 (10 1/2 weeks)

Whether you are a new mom or a veteran, whether you gave birth to or adopted your child, in this online class you’ll learn how to take birth and motherhood stories and turn them into art. Weekly lectures, reading assignments and writing exercises will focus on telling details, character development, emotional distance, strengthening your reflective voice, and revision. (Use Your Words will be the primary text for the class.) You can expect to generate two to three creative nonfiction pieces, and you will have an opportunity to revise and expand one of these into a longer piece. You will receive feedback from your peers and from me through online workshops. I will also read and comment on an additional 10 pages of writing outside of class. This class is open to writers of all ability levels! Join this online community of mothers who are interested in writing about motherhood!

Cost $350.  Please e-mail me at katehopper [at] msn [dot] com if you have any questions about the class or would like to register.  Limited registration. Please spread the word.

Also, if you weren’t able to make it to the 7th Annual Motherhood & Words Reading with Katrina Kenison and Caroline Grant at the Loft Literary Center last May, don’t worry. You can listen to it now as a Mom Enough podcast. Thank you once again to Mom Enough for making this possible.

I have been teaching creative writing for almost twenty years. Reading about other women’s lives and experiences has expanded my world. To be able to walk in someone else’s shoes, whether it’s for a moment or an hour or a few days, is an incredible gift, providing me with insight into the human experience. It takes courage to write your truths, especially if it doesn’t seem as though anyone cares, as though anyone is listening. Let me tell you: your stories matter, I’m listening, and I’m here to help you find the heart of those truths, to get them down on the page, to craft them, and to send them out into the world. Together, we will change the world, one story at a time.

Just recommended the class and Use Your Words to one of my groups! So glad I managed to squeeze into last fall’s class.

Looking forward to listening to the podcast. I listened to a bunch of older ones late last winter while knitting. Maybe I’ll try it while canning now.

Thank you for spreading the word, Sara!! I really appreciate it! And I’m also so grateful that you were able to take the class last fall.

And I look forward to your thoughts on the podcast!
